Kia Motors - Kia Sedona Transmission fails at 40,000 miles and warranty void
I purchased a 2005 KIA Sedona brand new in 10/2005 and just recently moved across state and put additional mileage on the vehicle. At 40K the transmission failed and van was towed to KIA in which they asked if I had performed the 30K required maintenance and must provide receipts of such in order for the 100K warranty be in effect and for them to order a new transmission.
The 30K maintenance requires a transmission flush and because I had failed to do that at 30K it voided my warranty and cost me out of pocket $2045.00 in which I had fixed at a dealer beside KIA that wanted to charge me $3000. This was very costly to us at a time in which I had curtailed income due to having a new baby and KIA did not care. I will never buy a KIA again and plan on getting rid of the two KIA we own now. Very Pissed..
And will tell everyone and anyone I know that KIA should have a disclaimer in their advertisement of 100K/10Year warranty that it will only honor the warranty if the customer performs the required maintenance. I would hate for this to happen to anyone else.
No transmission should fail at 40K even if the transmission was not flushed at 30K, this is a poorly build product.
Monetary Loss: $2000.

We bought a brand new 2011 Kia Sorento in Feb. 2010 and had to have a new transmission put in at 2300 miles. Have had 3 more issues with the transmission since and now they are telling us that we have to pay $200 for having the transmission flushed or the Warranty is Void.
My 2006 KIA SEDONA Van had a new transmission put in a week and a half ago it just Died..BRAND NEW!
Warranty covered the new transmission..So hope they will fix it this time DO not BUY a KIA
FINE PRINT means get out of jail free for dealers and warranty service. I've also noticed over the decades of doing business with national companies that many local stores or dealers always have a " local " policy meaning they will try to get out of national obligations anyway they can. This is a failure of corporate leadership to police their own franchises because that's basically what a dealer is-a franchise.
I would've asked them was there actual damage done from not doing a flush. Was the transmission fluid at proper levels and color. Also always check with corporate customer service ie 1-800 numbers or call centers. Sometimes corporate will direct a local store to how to handle a situation.
First, you do NOT have to have a transmission flush at 30K. The scheduled service only requires it to be checked.
Second, someone mentioned in a comment that if you do the scheduled maintenance at the dealer, it is free.
NO, it isn't. It'll cost between $200 and $500, depending on how greedy your dealer is.
I have always loved my Kias the warranty is the best, I think people are very wrong here. If your warranty was denied you didn't do something right obviously. Kia warranty service maintenances are the industry standard across all car manufacturers wake up people :cry
Not everyone is as fortunate as you. Until you deal with a problem you never know how incompetent their service department is and how difficult they are to deal with.
I have 2, 2008 Kia Sedona EX and I know just from reading the manual that I need to do the required services at the required intervals they are no different than any other vehicles It is called preventive maintenance When we disregard maintenance we are saying we don't care about our vehicles so we get what we get. If any of us wrote the waranty it would be exactly the same industry standards so please blame yourselves not the Warranties!!!
Live and Learn if you didn't know, ignorance is no excuse either....
My transmission on my '05 Kia Sedona went out at 96500 miles. They said that even though I live in Phoenix and had my transmission fluid checked regularly and had the fluid replaced TWICE in that time, that my warranty claim was denied because I DID HAVE IT FLUSHED!!
They told the OP that it was because he had NOT had it done. Kia warranty = SCAM
Sorry, have to write again because before people respond so rudely, they should have their facts straight.....You do not have to go to the dealership to maintain your warranty on your Kia. It does have to be done and you have to keep all records.
You also have to be well prepared, polite and persistent in getting them to honor it.
Just like working with insurance companies. I have a feeling there are some people on this site who don't have a lot of tact, so good luck with that.
Ricardo,
You gave wise advice. However, if a KIA dealer requires someone to be nice before they honor their legal documents, then please contact me right away to file the lawsuit for you! What a great case that would be...a sure winner.
I would like to say that I have a 2005 Kia Sedona and your facts are not correct. To keep your warranty valid you do have to perform your scheduled maintenance, which does require a 30,000 mile check up.
It does not require a transmision flush at 30,000 miles. They do not even recommend them at the dealership. You do have to have your fluid inspected and filled if need be.
If you are doing your standard maintenance, which we should do to keep our vehicles running well, then they should have honored their warranty. I'm curious how polite and persistant you were in trying to resolve this issue.
So, you think 100,000 mile transmission warranty means you don't have to take care of your transmission? Will you complain when your tires go flat because you don't check the air?
Will you complain when your engine blows up because you waited 20,000 mile to change your oil?
Do you get mad when you run out of gas too?
You complainers make me laugh. You expect something for nothing.
:) my sedona is now approaching 100 k it has performed much better than i expected. i have been late on my maintence of the vehicle but have performed the 30 k and 60 k maintence. this vehicle is getting ready for the next 100k that i will put on it.
Tranny Blew out at 40000 miles. Oh well. I will spend the rest of my life boycotting KIA.
Yes, I wish those Korean *** would not have equivocated their 100,000mi/10yr warranty with a REAL WARRANTY. IT IS NOT! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!!! ! !
WE ALL HATE BEING MISLEAD WHEN SPENDING HARD EARNED DOLLARS. I GUESS THOSE KIMCHEE EATING VICTIMS OF N. KOREA WHOM WE HAD TO SAVE DURING THE KOREAN WAR HAVE CAN'T EQUAL AMERICAN STANDARDS BY HONESTY!! THOSE RICE EATERS HAVE TO LIE TO IMAGINE THEIR PRODUCTS EQUAL TO FORD/CHEV.
I hope our government gave them an equal warranty on any other invasions by N. Korea.
It is quite obviouse that You are trying to insult ppl. What is your purpose on this?
I think you just prove yourselt a vile and disgusting racist. Hope you grew up next time.
yes the KIA and other warrantys are misleading...they hide the fact the warranty requirements can get very pricey.
It must be done by a dealer so its even more costly.
so the truth is the warranty is double charged back to you thru their "forced" checkups at 30,60,90K...
nothing is free.
they built an industry on lies and is why all the car dealers are in financial troubles.
and the taxpayers bailed them out.
Are you suggesting that not taking the car to the dealership at 30,000 miles for them to check the transmission fluid is the same thing as setting fire to it??? And its not free when you have to take a whole day off from work to have the *** check the fluid level.
They make and sell ***. Lesson learned, pass it on.
:cry
you're an ***. of course you have to do the maintainence or your warranty will be void!
by the way, it also voids your warranty if you purposely set your vehicle on fire! you know they give you a booklet that tells you what you need to get and when right?
oh and it's free if you go to a kia dealership to have it done. hm.
