My opinion is that they should fix my engine as it was their bolt that sheared off - it is clearly evident from the original receipt that they replaced it for the recall - the bolt itself is very distintive in design and color and is easily recognized as the same type that KIA used fo the recall - the dealership installed the timing belt and I assume they installed a new bolt as well - yes I was at fault in not keeping track of every piece of documentation concerning my vehicle - however that does not negate their responsibility in standing by their product.
It may cost me a few thousand today but I will assure you that it will cost KIA much more in consumers relation. 1290648

2. Written by Christie on May 6, 2012 from roxie, mississippi, US I have a 2003 Kia Sorento that I purchased last March. I got into it the other day to leave, cranked it up, and heard a knocking noise. My uncle just looked at it and called to tell me the crankshaft bolt is broke. I now am looking up about it and find all this out about the recall. I was completely unaware of this problem and I am on very upset customer right now. I will calling the dealership I bought it from first thing in the morning. ![]()

Written by Shamus on March 2, 2012 from fredericton, new brunswick, CA Just bought a used 2003 sorento in January, and two days ago, the crankshaft bolt came out. took the fans out and replaced it. Started the motor and it fell out again before I could put it in gear. POS vehicle imho. bad on gas and finding a manual (which only kia makes) is frigging impossible. |

7. Written by RE: KIA SORENTO CRANK SHAFT BO on December 24, 2011 from las vegas, nevada, US I too have had this problem. I have a 2005 Kia Sorrento. I do all my own wrench work. I replaced the timing belt and torqued the crank shaft bolt to the 130lb torque (didn't replace the bolt because this isn't normal). 3-6 months later it backed out and seized. While trying to take it out it broke off in the crank shaft. Being a reasonable person I went down to KIA to see what they would do. They said they would charge me over $100 to review the problem. If it was covered under warrantee they would see if it could be replaced under warrantee and they would refund my money. I told them it was obvious what the problem was and the bolt was the same color as the recall bolt but the car missed the recall date by 30 days. I then did what any reasonable person would do, knowing I had a very large paper weight, and bought a new car (this was after much research on the engine and lack of parts and re-man engines at the time, a MAZDA 5, Highly recommend). After much research I found that if you use carbide tipped drill, you can drill out the center of the bolt. Don't use easy outs or dry ice in the hole, as the easy outs just get mad and break off. I pushed the broken easy out through the bolt into the space behind the bolt. I then tapped the bolt a smaller size, after that I tapped the bolt the size of the crank shaft and the remains of the bolt came out as foil. This worked great for 3 years. Last night it sheared off again. Working on engines my whole life, I have never seen a flush mount harmonic balancer on any engine. The only thing to keep this from spinning is the torque of the bolt and a roll pin. This is the craziest design I have ever seen for such an important bolt. Everyone else uses a woodruff key and the pulley slides over the crank shaft. Very bad design. I guess I'll do it again, It's now my daughters college car which is a 6 hour drive. This sucks bad, bad, bad, design. KIA's look great, but their "urgy's" are not up to USA standards. That would be Metallurgy, Painturgy, plasticurgy, and oh by the way, design and engineering. Oh this car also has a drinking problem never saw more then 18mpg. ![]()
8. Written by Car guy on December 22, 2011 from red deer, alberta, CA This motor is a great motor other than the crack bolt issue. Need to be aware and check pulley for wobble once and a while. Change timing belt and water pump every 60-70K to be sure they don't reuse the bolt I would mark the bolt with a paint marker and see if its been changed out after service. This bolt gets torqued which stretches the threads to keep it tight. You cannot put it back in or it will be loose even after torqing it again which will only cause it to go in further than it should and stretch the bolt more which will cause it to sheer off after some use.

10. Written by Barbara on December 1, 2011 from garden city, new york, US posted a previous comment on Oct 3, 2011. That *** bolt broke again. Am so pissed off. My mechanic has suggested that I trade this bucket of bolts in. He was told by the Kia auto parts person that the piece was redesigned. They redesigned the piece without doing a recall. My mechanic also suggested that I contact a lawyer.
